Yesterday we marked the anniversary of our foundress, Nano Nagle at our annual Presentation Day Mass. The Mass was celebrated by School Chaplain, Fr. Benny McHale and attended by Sr. Carmel Raftery, Sr. Catherine O'Connor, Sr. Teresa McDonagh along with our staff and students.
Born in Co. Cork in 1718, Nano Nagle came from a landed family who sent her and her sister Anne to France for an education, which was forbidden in Ireland under the Penal Laws. Returning home, she clandestinely set up a number of hedge schools to educate the needy. In 1775 Nano entered a noviciate and became a nun. Nano went on to found a convent and the order of the Presentation Sisters in 1777. Nano is widely credited with establishing girls education in Ireland through her work with the Presentation Sisters. Nano died in 1784 and her legacy lives on today in Presentation Schools across the world.
